Oh Darn, warming trend ahead

Friday, January 30th, 2009

We Minnesotan’s love our winter. It gives us bragging rights with our friends and family who live in the warmer climes. Most of all, we like it because we can snowmobile, ice skate at neighborhood rinks, ski, go tobogganing, ice fish and hang out at the St. Paul Winter Carnival.

But alas, tomorrow it is forecasted to warm up above freezing for the first time in 2009. We will see hearty Minnesotan’s walking outside with their coats open, hats and gloves in their pockets enjoying the nice weather with a smile. A smile because we know the temps will fall again and we can get back to that fishing hole in the ice.

Join us at the Historic Heights B & B and Events. It is warm a cozy here, especially near the new fireplace.

In Minnesota you can “move your house!”

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

What can you do in Minnesota that cannot be done in Florida? Yep, you can move your home from an island to the mainland.

The house weighed 60 tons and was placed on dollies with 64 tires under the house. A huge tow truck attached a cable to the dollies platform and eased forward to prepare for the move.

The questions were many. Would the two foot thick ice hold the 120,000 pound house as it moved across the ice? Will the dollies stay under the building in just the right places while moving the house, thus distributing the weight of the house evenly? Onlookers joked about the largest, most luxurious “ice fishing house” on the lake.

“The truck tugged, the house crept and the move was on” reported the StarTribune. Twenty five minutes later the move of 100 yards on the ice was successfully completed.

Weddings at Historic Heights B & B

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

During December, two brides and grooms chose to get married at the Historic Heights. Sonjia and Kurtis wanted to have their small family wedding in a home, so everyone would be comfortable. Only problem was, no one had a home where the 36 member family could all gather to enjoy the wedding and be able to have a reception during December.

Sonjia and her Mom toured the Historic Heights and found a homey feeling, enough space for both the wedding and reception plus a place for the family members to stay who were coming from out of town for the wedding.

It was a beautiful wedding and everyone got to know each other in a warm low key setting. Said the bride, “We are gushing about how much we loved your place for our wedding!! We received so many compliments about the location! It was PERFECT!”

Celebrating Our Winter

Monday, January 26th, 2009

For eleven days each January, St. Paul Minnesota claims to host the “Coolest Celebration on Earth.” The nation’s oldest (123 years) and largest winter festival celebrates with an outdoor treasure hunt, snow sculpture, ice carving contests, hockey, 5K and 1/4 marathon (outdoor,) curling, gymnastics, ice boat racing and a magnificent torchlight parade.

King Boreas and the Queen of Snows preside over the activities heralding the snow and cold. Their fun ends on the last day of the festival when they are overthrown by Vulcanus Rex and his Krewe, signaling that spring is ahead.

The Historic Heights Bed & Breakfast is located just 15 minutes from the fun. Join us and we will make sure you get to attend any festival events you would like.
